Lauren Maillian Bias

Founding Partner

Lauren Maillian Bias is the Founder and CEO of Luxury Market Branding, a strategic marketing and branding company. Previously, Lauren was the Chief Operating Officer of Sugarleaf Vineyards, a company she founded at 19 years old, making her the youngest self-made winery owner in the country. Lauren is a serial entrepreneur with a business development mindset that concentrates on the creation and implementation of innovative yet strategic plans that build brand identity and increase revenue. Throughout her entrepreneurial ventures, Lauren has been an active investor in real estate and natural resources. Her work has been featured in national media outlets including Forbes, American Express OPEN Forum, Fast Company, UPTOWN Magazine, and Black Enterprise. Lauren is a Mentor to Women Innovate Mobile, and has spoken about entrepreneurship and business development at The University of Virginia and The Private Equity Women Investor Network (PEWIN). Lauren has a BS in International Trade and Marketing and is very active in various philanthropic organizations that affect youth, poverty, education and the arts and is a Lifetime Member of the Children’s Aid Society. In 2011, Lauren was recognized at The White House by the Kauffman Foundation as an Empact 100 honoree; a list that names the top 100 entrepreneurs under 30.

By bringing together the brightest minds in the venture world, we have an investment committee with a large diversification of both interests and experience.

Ed Zimmerman, Advisor
Ed founded and chairs the Tech Group at Lowenstein Sandler. Ed works with growth and start-up companies as general outside counsel and in VC/PE/Angel deals and exits. He also handles those deals on behalf of numerous VC/Growth Equity and Angel Investors. Most of his clients are focused on the internet, software or hardware. Ed co-founded and chairs www.FirstGrowthVN.com, a formal mentoring program and peer group for a jury-selected group (or “vintage”) of high potential, seed and early stage start-up tech entrepreneurs. Ed is an active angel investor and he co-founded and co-leads www.GrapeArborVC.com, an angel investor group comprised of 9 friends who spend their professional lives working with and/or in tech start-ups. Ed founded and co-chairs www.AngelVineVC.com, a NYC-based gathering of angels, VCs, serial entrepreneurs and senior execs in the tech industry striving to strengthen the community of those interested in funding and supporting early-stage ventures, primarily but not exclusively in digital media, financial services and cloud/virtualization. Ed serves on the National Venture Capital Association’s Model Documents Project, where he is part of a select team of VC lawyers revising the industry standard VC deal documents.

Jonathan Teo, Investment Committee Member and Advisor
As a Managing Director of General Catalyst Partners, Jonathan invests in both new and existing technology businesses. His areas of special interest include: enterprise software/infrastructure and social media.

Before joining General Catalyst Partners, Jonathan was a Principal at Benchmark Capital in Menlo Park, CA for three years, where he played key roles in investments including Twitter, Eucalyptus Systems and Instagram. Prior to Benchmark he managed several engineering teams at Google and was an early member of its Strategy and Business Operations group focusing on international expansion of research and development.

Jonathan is a graduate of Stanford University, earning a MS and Sydney University where he received a BS in Electrical Engineering. Jonathan serves as the General Catalyst Board Observer to Chloe + Isabel.

Matt Cohen, Investment Committee Member and Advisor
Matt Cohen is a Principal of City Light Capital. He is currently an Observer to the Board of both LicenseStream and City Light Carbon. Matt brings a blend of financial services and operating/start-up experience to City Light. Prior to joining City Light, Matt was an investment banker in the Global Industrials groups of Citigroup and Bear Stearns where he advised companies in a broad range of sectors on corporate strategy objectives, financing matters, recapitalizations, joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to his career in investment banking, Matt worked in asset management capacities at Bear Stearns and O’Shaughnessy Capital and was a founding member and Vice President of Business Development for Netfolio,Inc., a financial services start-up where he helped raise $40 million in funding, develop and implement the business plan and establish key partnerships. Matt has an MBA from Cornell University, where he was a Park Fellow, receiving a full-tuition scholarship for demonstrated leadership and commitment to community service and socially responsible business and a BA from the University of Connecticut where he double majored in Economics and Spanish.

Nikhil Kalghatgi, Investment Committee Member and Advisor
Nikhil is an early-stage Venture Capitalist at SoftBank Capital and is based in NYC. He focuses on evaluating and sourcing Seed and Series A opportunities and has special interests in mobile, e-commerce and social platforms. Nikhil was Founder and Fund-Manager of Partner 6 Investment Group, a micro hedge fund in Boston and then joined the founding team of Localytics, a mobile application analytics provider. Nikhil is a recovering engineer with several years of experience in front-end design and development focused on mobile and web UX before completing his MBA at Harvard Business School.
